Near-nudity does not provide confidence

In response to Sydney Spies’ letter (Herald, March 12), I am a 16-year-old girl. I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out how posing half-naked for a yearbook picture makes you a strong, beautiful woman. I have come to my conclusion that it doesn’t.

Showing girls that this is OK is what is making our society the way it is. If we tell young girls the only way to be confident in yourself is to pose scandalously, then we are the ones corrupting society. A study has shown that girls tend to develop identity from ages 6-14 years of age. Let me ask you, parents: Do you want your daughters to only feel beautiful dressing to other people’s standards?

Young girls are already vulnerable from middle school through high school, and society swaying their opinion on how to dress is leading them in the wrong direction.

So girls, cover up. You are beautiful and strong without having to show off your body. The strong women in this world are the ones who can cover up and still be confident in who they are.
