Durango residents who need to get rid of any unused or expired prescription medications can safely do so next weekend.

The Drug Enforcement Agency and the Durango Police Department will accept medication tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 28 as part of DEA National Drug Take Back Day, according to a post on Durango police’s Facebook page. The event will take place at DPD’s Three Springs substation, 545 Wilson Gulch Drive.

Liquid medication, including intravenous solutions, syringes and sharp items will not be accepted, the Facebook post said.

DPD will also collect food donations such as canned fruits and vegetables, as well as dry cereal, oatmeal and pasta boxes, at the event. Food items will be donated to Manna soup kitchen.

Vaping devices and cartridges will be accepted, but lithium batteries must be removed before being donated.
