Henry Nelson, a junior on Fort Lewis College’s cycling team, finished second in the 50-mile Leadville Silver Rush mountain bike race Sunday.
Nelson, 20, finished the race in 3 hours, 42 minutes and 38 seconds, a little over seven minutes after the winner, 19-year-old Jack Odron of Denver.
The Life Time Silver Rush 50 Run presented by La Sportiva and Stages Cycling Silver Rush 50 MTB events, owned and produced by Life Time, took place in a back-to-back format over the weekend. Roughly 1,300 bikers and runners from 43 states competed in races either 15 miles or 50 miles long.
Defending champion Lindsey Herman of Gunnison took first place in the 50-mile run for the women in 7:31:19, winning by almost 49 minutes. Bryan Kerl of Salida finished first in the men’s division in 6:16:17, beating JP Golpin of Boulder by 2:10.
Hannah Reese of Littleton took first place in the 50-mile mountain bike ride for the women in 4:54:01.
Endurance enthusiasts were also invited to sign up for the Silver Queen and Silver King, first completing the Silver Rush 50 Run on Saturday and then the Stages Cycling Silver Rush 50 MTB on Sunday. About 45 athletes finished both events within the allotted time and walked away with Silver King and Silver Queen titles.
The Life Time Leadville Trail 100 Run, presented by La Sportiva and also known as the “Race Across The Sky,” will take place Aug. 20.
The Stages Cycling Leadville Trail 100 MTB, the fourth event in the Life Time Grand Prix Series presented by Mazda, will take place Aug. 13.
