New 9-R Activities Code is a go

Parents, students need to understand consequences

School just let out for the summer, but before Durango School District 9-R students head back to activities and classes in August, it will pay to do some homework by reading the new Activities Code.

The code was approved Tuesday night at the 9-R board’s work session and meeting. The code lays out more specific consequences for infractions and incorporates restorative justice as students learn about the impact of their behavior on others and themselves.

The Healthy Choices Committee, which drafted the code, was formed after two athletic teams had incidents with drug and alcohol paraphernalia on fall away trips during 2015-2016 school year.

Leanne Garcia, who co-chaired the committee, said the code goes into effect the first day of practice of a Colorado High School Activities Association-sanctioned activity and continues until the final day of CHSAA activities.
