I just read the article regarding the city of Durango updating its logo (Herald, Feb. 19).
I read the city could spend several hundred thousand dollars. I think spending huge amounts would be excessive. The city should give a preference to a local person or company to design the logo. We have many talented artists and designers here who can design our logo. Durango can and should design its own logo. Keep it local.
The present logo has mountains and a steam train. These are two of the main reasons people come from all over to visit our city, and we should keep them. Maybe we should also include the river and Native Americans in any future designs. They attract thousands of visitors. The train founded the town, so it should be there with the mountains and river; and the ancient ruins were here for thousands of years. These are four of the main things that bring people to our beautiful part of Colorado.
Two hundred and eighty thousand people visited Mesa Verde in 2020 and more in 2021. The train brought 219,000 riders to town last year to ride a steam train that now runs on recycled motor oil. Thousands come to raft, boat and fish in our rivers and streams. The mountains had a large increase in visitors. Our business community has been built to serve these and many other visitors.
Please reach out to City Council and tell them to keep it local and include these images in any logo.
