Do you know a family that is struggling to find quality child care so the adults can work and support their family? Do you know a child who is missing the consistency of quality interactions and nurturing environments?
Our future depends on our ability to foster the health and well-being of our children. We know that every experience, both positive and negative, forms the young child’s brain and dramatically influences the rest of life. Unfortunately, we are not doing everything possible to ensure that children have all they need to reach their potential.
Many community members are coming together to explore how we can do better for our children in what we are calling the Child Care Crisis Committee.
There are many facets to this crisis: lack of qualified staff, low pay for staff, local policies that block access, the difference between the true cost of quality child care and what is affordable. But at the center of all our work is the child who needs us to do everything possible to solve these problems.
I invite you to help be a part of the solution by joining the committee at our next meeting from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, in the 9-R Administration Building or by stopping by the Durango Public Library Children’s Room on the same day between 2:30 and 5 p.m. to learn all you need to know about the process of starting a licensed child care program in your home, the required training you need to take, and ask any questions you might have about this great career opportunity. You can make a difference! Contact me at lculver@durangoschools.org with questions.
