ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico House Minority Leader Brian Egolf says he’s not ready to support a GOP-sponsored proposal creating a “two-tier” driver’s license system modeled after Utah.
The Santa Fe Democrat said this week he’s awaiting details on a plan to grant driving privilege cards for immigrants – even those suspected of living in the country illegally.
Republican Rep. Paul Pacheco plans to sponsor a bill to end a stalemate between the GOP-controlled House and the Democratic-led Senate.
Egolf says for now he supports the Senate proposal that lets immigrants keep licenses regardless of status.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently denied New Mexico an extension on complying with tougher federal requirements that require proof of legal residency for state driver’s licenses and IDs to be valid for some federal purposes.
