New Mexico lawmakers honor ‘The Voice’ winner Chevel Shepherd

Farmington teen performed two songs for state senators
Chevel Shepherd, winner of “The Voice,” performs at her hometown concert on Jan. 26 at the Farmington Civic Center. On Tuesday, New Mexico state senators honored the 16-year-old singer with the passage of Senate Memorial 52.

Farmington teenager Chevel Shepherd, who won season 15 of the television singing competition “The Voice,” was honored again Tuesday, this time by New Mexico state senators.

Sens. Steve Neville, R-Aztec, and Bill Sharer, R-Farmington, sponsored Senate Memorial 52, “recognizing the great achievement of the 16-year-old,” according to a news release from the New Mexico Senate Republican Office.

SM 52 was read to Chevel on the Senate floor, and she in turn performed two songs for the Senate: “Broken Heart,” the song she sang during the finale of “The Voice,” an original tune and her first single; and Loretta Lynn’s “You are Looking at Country.”

The Senate passed SM 52 unanimously, the news release said.
