New Mexico women cited with DUI in crash near Bayfield

Driver of Chevy sedan drifted into oncoming traffic, troopers say

A woman from New Mexico was cited on suspicion of driving under the influence, careless driving and possession of an open container of alcohol in a crash last week on U.S. Highway 160 in front of the Conoco gas station in Bayfield.

Brianna James, 20, with no hometown provided to the Colorado State Patrol, was cited after her westbound Chevrolet sedan wandered into the eastbound lane and hit the rear of an eastbound Dodge pickup driven by Robert Butrynowicz, 42, of Bayfield, said CSP Trooper Josh Lewis.

Butrynowicz was not injured. James suffered minor injuries, but the report on the incident doesn’t indicate if James was taken to a hospital, Lewis said.

Butrynowicz was not cited.

Lewis said traffic was constricted after the crash for cleanup, but the highway was never fully closed. Lewis did not know how long traffic was slowed for cleanup after the crash.

The accident occurred about 6:34 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 104.

Details from the initial report to CSP as a head-on crash involving three vehicles were inaccurate, Lewis said.
