New online platform improves county code access

La Plata County’s regulatory code is now available to the public on the county website.

EnCode, an online platform that enables live updates to the code, became fully functional this month.

With the previous platform, all code revisions and amendments had to go through the vendor, which could take as long as a year to publish. Therefore, the code has historically appeared out of date to the public, county spokeswoman Megan Graham said.

County officials now can make changes directly through enCode.

Kendig Keast Collaborative, the contractor recently hired to rewrite the county’s land-use code in 2017, will use a parallel version of the platform to craft the new code wherein residents can review the draft language and make comments along the way.

The comments will appear on the draft and show the public precisely where discussion points exist and better include residents in the rewrite process. The public also can compare current and archived versions of the code.

“This dramatically increases the usability of the online code function,” Graham said. “And it provides a nice public engagement tool.”
