Happy New Year! I hope 2017 is a great year for everyone. We will do our best to help in this by offering myriad music, art and theater events for your enjoyment.
At 3 p.m. Sunday, come to Roshong Recital Hall to hear some really wonderful music presented by M. Brent Williams, violin/viola; and John O’Neal, marimba/vibraphone. Williams will open with the beautiful, virtuosic and sometimes melancholy Capriccio for Viola Solo by Henri Vieuxtemps. Next, Williams will take you to Armenia with Alan Hovhaness’ Chahagir.
O’Neal will join Williams for the rest of the concert, starting with “Legal Highs” by David P. Jones, with movements titled “Mr. Coffee,” “Menthology” and “Sweet Thing”; and Charles Wuorinen’s “Eleven Short Pieces for Violin and Vibraphone.” Wuorinen wrote this for a miniaturist society in New York and, as a result, the 11 pieces are extremely short.
Opening at the Art Gallery with a reception at 4:30 p.m. Thursday is “Ro Sham Bo: New Work by Jennifer Holt.” Holt’s porcelain, sculpture and installation art revolves around notions of time, place and memory. She currently lives in Flagstaff, Arizona, where she is a practicing artist and instructor of art at Northern Arizona University. Funding for this exhibit, which will run through Feb. 17, is provided by the Richard Ballantine FLC Visiting Artist Fund.
Welshly Arms kicks off a new series within the Concert Hall’s series “Artists You NEED to Know” at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21. Hailing from Cleveland, blues/rock band Welshly Arms owes its unique sound to the collective influences of rhythm and soul, rock ’n’ roll and a hint of classic jazz/blues. The dance floor will be open.
The FLC Jazz Band is traveling to perform at the Colorado Music Educators Association annual convention in Colorado Springs on Jan. 27. You don’t have to travel to the Springs to hear them because they’ll give a preview performance at the Concert Hall at 7 p.m. Jan. 23. Come have a listen and cheer them on in anticipation of this important event!
