Bayfield Early Education Programs once again will host "The Incredible Years," a 14-week free parenting class starting Jan. 18. Meetings will be held at the BEEP facility from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday.
Each two-hour session will focus on gaining a better understanding of children, learning strategies for improving behavior and helping children to be successful in school. The program was recently praised by the FPG Child Development Institute for providing long-term benefits to families. Local parent Jen Gosney and Jackie Juliano, a guidance counselor at Bayfield Elementary Primary School, have been trained to facilitate the program.

The Pine River Valley Historical Society is having its annual meeting at 10 a.m. Jan. 13 at the Lions Hall on Church Street in downtown Bayfield.
All members, want-to-be members and valley residents are welcome.
Pine River Centennial Rotary Club members are now selling "ball adoption" tickets for Red Ball Express, an annual fundraiser for the four Rotary clubs in La Plata County. Red Ball Express will happen on Saturday, Feb. 10, on the bunny hill at Purgatory. Large red exercise balls are released from a pen at the top of the hill. Each ball contains a number from 1 to around 120.
Each adoption ticket is scanned into a computer which assigns it two numbers. The ticket with the numbers of the first and second balls into the chute at the bottom of the hill wins $5,000. The third and fourth balls are worth $2,000, and the fifth and sixth balls are worth $1,000. Winners are announced within 20 minutes of the ball drop. Red Ball is a primary fundraiser for the four Rotary clubs, for their community service projects. Pine River Rotary meets on Wednesdays at noon at Tequila's in downtown Bayfield. Visitors are welcome.
La Plata County Independent Youth Performing Arts is raising funds for its performing arts programs. Krispy Kreme doughnuts will be sold on Friday, Feb. 2 for $10 per dozen, with pick up in Bayfield, Durango and Ignacio. To reserve doughnuts, comment on the group's facebook page, or text 903-4294.
The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18. The meeting will be held at Community Bank of Colorado in Bayfield, and SCAPE will make a brief presentation. SCAPE stands for Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs. They help with start-up businesses by helping to create a business plan/model development, financial modeling, product development, and sometimes even small start up loans and grants.
The Four Corners Back Country Horsemen will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 18, at Florida Grange, 656 Colorado Highway 172.
The program with Chad Moore advertised to be held Thursday was canceled. On Jan. 18, Scott Wait from Colorado Parks and Wildlife will discuss the process of introducing lynx to Southwest Colorado from Canada.

Southwest Colorado Genealogical Society will hold a meeting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Windom Room of Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.
Members will share information about family history, research and genealogical projects. The meeting will conclude with a winter potluck. The society will provide the main dish, though participants should bring food as well.
The meeting is open to all.

Ticket sales for "Snowdown Fashion Do's & Don'ts" will open at 6 a.m. Jan. 20 at Magpie's Newsstand, 707 Main Ave.
The event is expected to sell out quickly.
Tickets cost $15 for regular seating and $20 for runway seating. Sales are limited to four tickets per person. Tickets include a meal.
Standing-room-only tickets cost $6 and are limited to the first 125 people.
All proceeds benefit Snowdown Durango, a nonprofit organization that promotes fun, commerce and tourism, in that order.
Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed, worst dressed, funniest costume, best theme and the costume grand prize.

La Plata Electric Association will help students apply for scholarships from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 16 at its Bodo Park headquarters, 45 Stewart St.
LPEA staff will answer questions and provide application assistance to high school seniors and parents.
Copies of all applications will be available. All high school seniors, including home-schooled students, who live in the LPEA service territory and receive their electricity from LPEA are eligible to apply for a variety of funding opportunities.
The application deadline is March 1.
