Library discussing heritage

Ignacio Community Library will host "Pushing the Limits: Heritage." Pushing the Limits is a reading, viewing, and discussion program for adults. In this installation, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 26 discussion will explore the things we leave for future generations, from landscapes to heirlooms. The book Lab Girl by Hope Haren also will be covered. The discussion will include tea, coffee, and food with Fort Lewis College associate professor of biology, Dr. Heidi Steltzer. Readers are welcome to stop by the library for a free copy of "Lab Girl" and sign up in person, over the phone, or on the ICL website calendar.

Durango groups host Earth Day events

The Earth Day Festival is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday at Rotary Park in Durango, with a 5K and one-mile family run, and kayak races. Music, booths, food, prizes, arts & crafts. This event is hosted by Durango Nature Studies. For more info and race fees, visit https://bit.ly/2H9umPc

A children's Earthy Day parade and people climate march is from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Sunday from the downtown train station to Rotary Park. The parade theme is "Every Animal Deserves a Habitat". "Leaf a Legacy," with tree planting and a BBQ picnic featuring local food is from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Fort Lewis College. Participants can plant a seedling and build something positive, with events sosted by te Environmental Center at Fort Lewis College and FLC Alumni. Bayfield library hosts composting workshop

Durango gardener Tom Bartles will host a workshop on "Making Organic Compost at Home" workshop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Pine River Library. The workshop will cover the details on various composting methods Bartles uses in use in his own gardens to increase yields and make his job easier. He will also cover several techniques to grow worms that work well, no matter where you live. Additional topics will include how to design your gardens to collect organic matter that will eventually turn into rich compost.

Volunteers needed for wilderness programs

San Juan Mountains Association, in partnership with San Juan National Forest, is seeking experienced hikers, backpackers and horsemen to volunteer for its wilderness information and ghost rider programs.

The wilderness information program promotes public education about leave-no-trace land ethics that protect the integrity of wilderness areas, and skilled mounted volunteers are needed for the ghost rider program.

Volunteers will be assigned to wilderness trails in the San Juan Mountains, particularly from Needle Creek Trail to Chicago Basin.

Training, uniforms and name tags are provided, and horsemen will be responsible for supplying their own stock. Training is available online or volunteers can attend a session in May.

Groups can apply for gardening resources

The Garden Project of Southwest Colorado, Moniker Foundation and Paonia Soil Co. have partnered to provide a school or organization in La Plata County with nine Smart Pod gardening totes and resources to support projects for locally grown food.

Tools, supplies, support and training for growing food is included.

Qualifying recipients include La Plata County schools or organizations that provide services to under-served populations, have a 22-square-foot garden space with 6 hours of sun exposure during the day, can provide irrigation through the growing season and can attend an education session with the Garden Project and Paonia Soil in May.

Garden installations will be held in mid-May.

Application deadline is April 27.

Vendors needed for Tractor Supply market

Gardeners, craftspeople, artisans and food producers are needed to showcase their goods at a spring market event May 12 at the Tractor Supply Co., 1175 Dominguez Drive.

The event is seeking vendors interested in selling homemade and homegrown items, such as crafts, furniture, candles, soaps, honey, eggs, produce, baked goods, etc.

Registration deadline is May 9.
