Library hosting kickoff party for Latino American event

The Ignacio Community Library has received a grant for upcoming programming, "Latino Americans: 500 Years of History." A kickoff party with food and music will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16. Learn how Latino Americans have helped shape a rich and varied history and culture in Southwest Colorado and beyond. ICL will screen the first episode of "Foreigners in Their Own Land" during the party. Live music will be performed by Los Mitotitos. Call the library at 563-9287 for details.

Bayfield Chamber meeting set for Sept. 10

The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thurssday, Sept. 10 at Village Feed and Supply at 39987 US Highway 160 in Gem Village.

Chamber members will hear about the upcoming Bayfield Heritage Days and receive a report on the Build a Better Bayfield Expo, as well as the Four Corners Motorcycle Rally.

Ignacio Community Library will host the following computer classes in September. All classes require registration at the library website or call 563-9287.

. Find A Job (With Help From the Internet)

5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. Learn some of the fundamental ways the internet can help you find a job or advance your career. This will cover a wide range of topics including job searching online, creating resumes and cover letters, and using job specific social media like LinkedIn.

. Windows 10 Overview

5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15. Microsoft released its latest operating system in July. Most new computers will be shipping with it pre-installed. Come learn some of the new features of Windows 10 and how it is fundamentally different from Windows 7 and Windows 8.

. Google Drive

5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22

Have you heard people say "Google Drive" but you have no idea what it is? Google Drive is a lot of things. It can be used for word processing or spreadsheets without having to pay for pricey software like Microsoft Office. It can also be a place to store your photos, music, and files. Learn all about it for FREE at the library during this evening session.

Airport hosting aviation celebration

The Durango-La Plata County Airport is hosting an "Aviation Celebration" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. At the free community event, people can view military, private, and emergency aircraft. The event will also include an opportunity to tour airport fire and rescue equipment, Durango Fire Protection District equipment, and airport snow removal equipment. Live musical performances will be provided by three groups: The High Rollers, The Rhapsodies, and The Durango High School Marching Band. Free food is being provided and the United Way is sponsoring a beer tent. Door prizes (including airport parking vouchers) will be given away to attendees. Backcountry Horsemen to meet Thursday

The Four Corners Back Country Horsemen will hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Guests are always encouraged to attend.

This month's presentation will take place in the pavilion at 7:30 with a discussion and fitting demonstration of hoof boots and composite shoes by Kevin Myers, director of marketing for EasyCare, Inc.

Dancing Spirit to host Trisha Dolan

Dancing Spirit Community Arts Center is now at the ELHI Community Center (former elementary school) in downtown Ignacio. They will host healer, medium, and business/ life coach Trisha Dolan on Sept. 16 and 17.

Dolan will give private readings by appointment on both days from 10 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 5 p.m. A half hour reading is $60, full hour $120.

Dolan will give a Money Magic workshop on Sept. 16 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. On Sept. 17 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. she will do readings with messages from departed friends and loved ones. The cost for these is $25 per session or $40 for both with pre-registration.

FLC to feature Temple Grandin, autism programs

Autism and one of the condition's most famous individuals, Temple Grandin, will be featured this month at Fort Lewis College. All events are free and open to the public. Grandin is known for being able to experience the world as animals do, and for campaigning for humane slaughtering systems. She has designed a third of the livestock handling facilities in the U.S.

The FLC Life-Long Learning program on Sept. 10 will answer questions about autism. That starts at 7 p.m. in 130 Noble Hall.

On Sept. 16 at the Durango Public Library, a panel of people affected by autism will provide their first-hand perspective on the condition. That starts at 7 p.m.

The film Temple Grandin, starring Claire Danes, will be shown on Sept. 22 in Bayfield at the Pine River Library at 6 p.m. and on Sept. 29 in Durango at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 7 p.m. It will also be shown on Oct. 14 at the FLC Student Union Vallecito Room at 4 and 7 p.m.

Grandin herself will speak and sign her books on Sept. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the FLC Whalen Gym. She will speak on "Helping Different Kinds of Minds Solve Problems."

On Oct. 7 there will be a panel discussion on "Animal Sentience and Human Interactions" from 7 to 9 p.m. at the FLC Student Union Ballroom.

Grandin's book, Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism will be the selection for the FLC Common Reading Experience. Read the book and join the conversation.

KDUR Community Radio will broadcast a program titled Making a Difference from 5:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays from mid-September to mid-November. They are at 91.9 and 93.9 FM.
