County commissioner holding meeting
County Commissioner Gwen Lachelt will hold her monthly meet-the-public session from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, July 13 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, in the Animas Room of the Extension Building.
"I am hoping that by holding office hours at the Extension Building, constituents from around the county will take advantage of the free parking to come to discuss issues of concern or interest, and share their opinions on county issues with me," Lachelt says. Learn about EMS, fire science classes
Information and orientation about EMS and fire science classes at Southwest Colorado Community College will be presented at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 13 at the West Campus, 33057 Hwy. 160, between Mancos and Cortez. This informational session and orientation meeting will explain the EMS and Fire Science classes, which have recently moved to the West Campus. Information available for struggling students
Parents whose kids are struggling with reading, spelling, or math are invited to a free information session at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 14 at Bayfield Wellness, 871 CR 501, across from Bayfield High School.
Organizer Jennifer Stoeckl says that reading and math obstacles often plague children through their school career. She uses a program called No More Tiers that she says goes beyond school intervention programs. The session will include refreshments and free assessments. Home school, public school, and any other families are welcome.
Western singer performing in Vallecito
Barry Ward will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday July 18 at Vallecito Church. Ward is a cowboy, singer and songwriter who last year won the Western Music Male Vocalist Award from the Academy of Western Artists. Along with this, he was inducted into the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame at the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, Kans. on Oct. 11. A potluck dinner will be at 6 p.m., followed by the concert. Beginning archery this weekend at Navajo
An archery workshop for beginners, 8-years-old and up - including adults - will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday and Sunday at the Sambrito Wetlands area at Navajo State Park.
Instructors will be on hand to provide the training. Those attending will learn the basics of archery safety, how to load arrows and how to shoot. Participants should bring a hat and water. To reach the Sambrito area, leave the main park entrance, turn left on Highway 151 and travel about 5 miles, turn left onto County Road 988 and continue to the parking lot. Friends of the Library to meet Saturday
The Friends of the Pine River Public Library will hold their next regular meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 11 in the Community Room of the library at 395 Bayfield Center Drive.
Shelley Walchak, the library director and author, will give a book talk on her new flyfishing book, 52 Rivers.
Demolition Derby tickets on sale
Tickets for the demolition derby at the La Plata County Fair are on sale now. Tickets for the annual event, which pits local drivers in an exciting race for survival, are $15 for all ages.
Tickets are at Durango Music, Handlebar Motorsports, the La Plata County Fairgrounds and Durango Muffler, as well as Mill Street Drug in Bayfield and Walker's Do It Best Hardware in Ignacio. The derby is slated for Saturday, Aug. 8 with gates opening at 10 a.m. and demolition heats starting at noon.
The 2015 fair will be held August 5-9 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. The five days of fun will feature entertainment for the whole family including a carnival, displays, exhibits, the livestock auction, the demolition derby, dancing, food and more.
Early registration due for Alzheimer's 5K
Athletes to End Alzheimer's will have a 5K run at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15 at Santa Rita Park in Durango. The event includes a walk-run, prizes, raffles, vendor booths, balloons and music.

Applications due for non-profit funding
The Town of Bayfield provides community support funding to local non-profit agencies every year. Applications for community support funding for 2016 are now being accepted. The application deadline is Friday, Aug. 7. In order to be eligible to apply, the local organization must be a certified non-profit in good standing and provide services to town residents.
