Bayfield trustee holding meeting

Bayfield Town Board Trustee J.J. Sanders will hold a "meet-the-public" session from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the Pine River Library conference room. He invites residents and business people to come with questions, concerns, or items of interest. He holds the sessions monthly.

Kindergarten registration is May 18-19

Bayfield Elementary Primary School will have its kindergarten registration May 18 and 19. Children must be five years old before Sept. 15 to register. Appointments are available at 884-0881. A birth certificate, immunizations and proof of residency are required. Incoming kindergarten students are asked to attend, as well.

Program provides insight on traditional Bear Dance

The Pine River Library is offering a program about the popular Ute cultural dance, Bear Dance.

"Awakening of Life: The Bear Dance Explained" will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13. Participants will hear from Russell Box, Sr., a Southern Ute tribal elder.

Ignacio Senior Center offers health insurance counseling

SUCAP's Ignacio Senior Center offers State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) counseling. SHIP counselors help local elders interpret and sign up for Medicare Part D.

The Ignacio Senior Center service area includes the Town of Ignacio, the Southern Ute Reservation and Arboles. The center is located at 15345 State Highway 172 in Ignacio. Hot meals are served at the center Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and Meals on Wheels are offered five days a week. To sign up for counseling or learn about other services, call 563-4561. The Ignacio Senior Center is a division of Southern Ute Community Action Programs, Inc.

Bayfield Chamber to meet Thursday

The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce will hold its May meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at First National Bank of Durango in Bayfield. The chamber board will present two $500 scholarships to BHS seniors. Also, plans will be discussed for the upcoming Yard Sale Day on Saturday, June 6. The June meeting will be on Thursday, June 11 at Silver Spruce Academy in Gem Village. More information about upcoming meetings is at www.bayfieldchamber.org.

Plant exchange next Saturday

The Pine River Garden Club will hold its plant exchange from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16 at the Pine River Library. Plants, seeds, novelties, baked goods and drinks will be exchanged. More information about the club and sign-ups will be available at the sale.

SJMA holding family backpack trip

San Juan Mountains Association is organizing a free overnight backpacking trip with other families on May 30-31 at Purgatory Flats. This trip is suitable for kids ages 7 and up with a parent or guardian.  Free rental equipment may be available for adults and larger kids.  For more information, contact SJMA at 385-1288 or mk@sjma.org.
