A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney will be offered from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 13, at the Ignacio Community Library.
By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms, and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues, and civil protection orders. Are you ready to move beyond the point-and-shoot digital camera? From 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, the Pine River Library will offer Photography 101, a basic digital photography class focused on DSLR or mirrorless cameras. This course will provide an introductory overview to DSLR menu settings and basic concepts like aperture.

The Evening Book Club at Ignacio Community Library will discuss I Am Malala, the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban by Christina Lamb and Malala Yousafzai. Malala is the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize which she won in 2014. This book club meets on the fourth Wednesday at 6 p.m. Books are available at the library service desk and on Overdrive. This month's meeting is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 25.
The La Plata Quilters Guild meeting on May 12 will feature a presentation by Maika Christensen on "A Quilted Marvel," on free motion quilting on your home machine. Mulch Madness is back at Three Springs from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Phoenix Recycling will be giving away free mulch and will assist with loading the mulch.

Leadership La Plata is recruiting candidates for its 2016-2017 class. LLP develops community leaders from Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio. Participants spend one Friday per month in areas around the county learning about local and regional issues. A weekend retreat is also required. An information session will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, at the Animas Room at Mercy Regional Medical Center. Alumni and organizers will be available to answer questions and talk about their LLP experience.

The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce will hold its May meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at Evenings Porch, 42811 Highway 160. La Plata County Humane Society is hosting Doggie Social Hour from 5:30 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday evening, weather permitting, in the outside play yard. Knowing how important good dog relationships are to our community, LPCHS hosts this public event to provide a safe, fun opportunity for dogs to interact in a supervised setting. Cost is $5 per dog. Thursday nights include "Ask the Trainer," where pranaDOGS trainer Marcy Eckhardt provides free guidance and expertise to basic questions and dog issues.
