Earth build program is tonight

Learn about "earthbag" construction today from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Pine River Library. The program was re-scheduled from May 6. Kaki Hunter and Doni Kiffmeyer, authors of Earthbag Building: The Tools, Tricks and Techniques will give a presentation on how it is done, where it has been done, and the advantages of this unique building style.

Ignacio schools carnival is Monday

The fifth annual TRRFCC Carnival will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 16 at Ignacio High School. There will be carnival activities including cake walk, ring toss, bouncy house, fish pond, bean bag toss, sno-cones, putting green, Knowledge Bowl, hungry hungry humans, darts, and more. Food and drink will be for sale at the concession stands. Tickets for carnival activities will be 25¢ each or five for $1.

Attendance awards will be announced at 6:45 in the Commons area.

The event is a fundraiser for the school district's Veterans' Dinner in November. It's organized by the District High Expectations Committee. TRRFCC stands for six pillars of Character Counts: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship. Students are expected to demonstrate these qualities.

Emerald Mile author to speak at library

Acclaimed author Kevin Fedarko will speak at the Pine River Library on Tuesday, May 17, about his book, The Emerald Mile, the epic story of the fastest ride in history through the heart of the Grand Canyon. The program is from 6 to 8 p.m.

"Kevin Fedarko's thrilling story takes the reader through the flood-swollen Grand Canyon on an adventure that seems more made-up than true," said Library Director Shelley Walchak. "I encourage our whole community to come out for this great event!"

Fedarko lives in Flagstaff and works as a part-time river guide in Grand Canyon National Park. In addition to his travel narratives in Outside magazine, Fedarko's work has appeared in Esquire, National Geographic, and other publications. Fedarko's presentation is the final installment of the Amazing Authors Series, offered in conjunction with Cortez Public Library and Telluride's Wilkinson Library. Learn about TABOR Amendment at library

Learn about the intricacies of the Colorado Taxpayer Bill of Rights, or TABOR, at the Pine River Library on Thursday, May 19, at 5 p.m. Carol Hedges, executive director of the Colorado Fiscal Institute, will help demystify the constitutional amendment approved by voters in 1992. It's best known provision is that any tax increase by any level of government must be approved by voters, but there's a lot more in TABOR. Hedges's position has made her well-versed in the ins and outs of TABOR. For more information, contact the Library at 884-2222, ext. 510.

Helpers needed for clean-up of Rosa cemetery

The Carmelitas of St. Peter-St. Rosa Catholic Church, 18851 Highway 151, Arboles, are organizing a cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 21 at the Rosa Cemetery. The cemetery is located at the south end of CR 975, immediately to the left after the state border cattle guard.

Anyone with family or friends buried at the Rosa Cemetery is encouraged to join the group for the first 2016 bi-annual cleanup. Morning coffee and lunch will be provided by the Arboles Carmelitas. Helpers should bring rakes, shovels, weedwhackers, and most importantly, wear gloves and hats. For more information, call 883-3330.

St. Peter-St. Rosa Church was built in 1978, merging the Rosa, N.M., and Arboles churches when the two original churches were torn down to make room for Navajo Reservoir. The church serves families in the Arboles, Allison, and Tiffany area.

Monthly potluck moves to park

The Pine River Shares monthly community potluck will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 21 at the Eagle Park pavilion in Bayfield. All are welcome. Please bring a side dish or dessert, your plates, bowls, utensils, and containers to take extras home. Non-perishable food and fresh veggies are welcome for the gleaning table. Volunteers are always needed to help with set-up and clean-up. For information call the Bayfield Family Center at 884-4747.

Ignacio library hosting author

Margaret Cheasebro of Aztec, author of The Healing Tree, will be at Ignacio Community Library at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

Cheasebro wrote the fantasy adventure over a five-year period after being motivated by her interest in nature and northwest New Mexico. A long-time journalist and freelance writer, Cheasebro is a retired elementary school counselor. She also has written several books of puppet plays for children.

Mercy to offer free labyrinth workshop on May 21

The public is invited to a free workshop, "Meet the Labyrinth: A Walk for Mind, Body, and Spirit," from 8:30 a.m. to noon on May 21 in conference room A at Mercy Regional Medical Center. The workshop will be taught by Luri Owen of Bayfield, who is a Veriditas-trained labyrinth facilitator. Veriditas is a San-Francisco-based non-profit that supports labyrinth education throughout the world.

The workshop will include walks on Mercy's 11-circuit outdoor labyrinth, and a presentation on labyrinth history, contemporary uses, personal experiences with labyrinths, and how to include labyrinths in a personal spiritual practice.

The workshop is limited to 20 participants. To reserve a space, contact Mercy's Department of Spiritual Care at 764-2340.

Get your "oysters" at FFA dinner

The Ignacio High School FFA chapter's bi-annual Rocky Mountain Oyster and Catfish Fry will be held on Saturday, May 21, from 5:30 to 11 p.m. at the Spring Creek Hall east of Ignacio. The menu also includes coleslaw, beans, rolls, dessert, tea and lemonade.

A pie auction will follow the dinner, and then participants can dance to live music by Wild Country.

Tickets for the dinner and dance are $15 for adults and $10 for kids under age 10. Admission for the dance only is $5 per person. Proceeds benefit the Ignacio FFA chapter. This is a tobacco and alcohol free event.
