Tickets available for Cattlemen's banquet

Tickets are available for the La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen's banquet on April 21 at the Sky Ute Event Center.

Tickets are available at the Basin Co-op, Valley Feed and Supply in Gem Village, Wells Fargo Bank in Ignacio, and the Bank of Colorado in Pagosa Springs.

The banquet will feature a prime rib buffet, a silent auction, a live auction of a Cow Belle Brand quilt, and dancing to a live band. The Cattlemen organized in 1950 and have held a banquet each spring since that time.

Rotary meeting for exchange students

Pine River Valley Rotary will have an informational meeting for students interested in living abroad as an exchange student, as well as for families who would welcome an exchange student into their home for three months.

The meeting is from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at the Heartwood Cohousing meeting room.

Free wellness screening at library

Pine River Library will host a free Wellness Screening organized by San Juan Health Basin from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, April 19.

The screening checks blood pressure, blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. The "instant" screening consists of only a finger poke and not full blood draw.

Participants get their results the same day along with their interpretation: Normal levels, high levels, etc. Nutritional information is also offered as a part of the screening. Fasting for nine hours before an appointment is encouraged. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact 335-2076.

Pine River Shares potluck April 20

The monthly Pine River Shares community potluck will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 20 at the Pine River Senior Center in Bayfield. All are welcome. Participants are invited to bring a dish on the theme of breakfast for dinner, or dessert if they can. The senior center is south of Joe Stephenson Park near the rodeo grounds, with access from South Street. For information about the potluck or other Pine River Shares activities, call 884-6040.

Chamber hosting lunch, LLP discussion

The Bayfield Chamber of Commerce will host a lunch and learn from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 19. The lunch and presentation will be held at the Bayfield High School and the lunch will be catered by the BHS catering class. Isaac Fleener will speak about Leadership La Plata.

"This is a very popular event and the kids do an amazing job on the food," chamber board members said. The cost for this event is $10.

IES holding fundraiser

Ignacio Elementary School will host Empty Bowls, a fundraiser to benefit local and international families with food insecurity.

The event is from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 20 at the school. Tickets are $10 and include a homemade bowl and soup samples. Tickets for a family of four cost $35. A silent auction also will be held. For more information, call 563-0675.

Volunteers sought for water festival

Southwestern Water Conservation District seeks volunteers for the 23rd annual Children's Water Festival on May 2 at Fort Lewis College.

The festival is a science conference for fifth-grade students that focuses on global water issues by offering exhibits and hands-on presentations about water-related topics. About 30 volunteer guides are needed to lead more than 650 students to stations set up on campus.

Guides will meet at 7:30 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom and work until 2 or 3 p.m.

Breakfast, lunch, a festival shirt and a water bottle will be provided.

The deadline to sign up is April 16.

LPEA launches "Fast Facts" page

La Plata Electric Association recently launched a new information portal on its webpage, www.lpea.coop: the "Fast Facts" page, which elaborates on, explains or corrects misinformation about the industry and the cooperative's policies.

Members with additional questions or assertions can email fastfacts@lpea.coop. Members will receive a personal response and the response will be added to the page.
