Breakfast to benefit Upper Pine captain

The Firefighters Association of Bayfield will host a pancake breakfast for Capt. Cate Harding from 7:30 a.m. to noon this Sunday at Station 5, near the entrance to Forest Lakes.

Harding has been diagnosed with breast cancer. A donation of $10 per plate is suggested. Donations also can be made online at upperpinefpd.org. For more information, call Dan Miller at 769-8809.

Be Frank hosting Frank 'N Stein

The Be Frank Foundation will hold its third annual Frank N' Stein fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31 at Bottom Shelf Brewery. The event is a block party on Mill Street with live music, games, costume contests, prizes, food, and a sky-high pumpkin smash. Admission is free. Commemorative beer steins will be sold and include two complimentary beers from Bottom Shelf or Ska Brewing. All proceeds benefit Be Frank's music and outdoor education programming for area youth. Destination Imagination meeting Oct. 26

San Juan BOCES is hosting several Destination Imagination informational meetings for parents, students, teachers and community volunteers. Destination Imagination (DI) is a program for students K-12 that fosters creative problem solving, teamwork, critical and divergent thinking skills, financial and time management, experimentation, presentation skills, and just plain fun.  

DI challenges students to tackle problems across multiple areas of interest, including architecture, art, theater, music, engineering, physics, mathematics and more. The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26 at the Durango 9R School District Building at 201 East 12th St. in Durango. Pine River Shares monthly potluck to be in Ignacio

This month's Pine River Shares community potluck will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at the new ELHI Community Center (old elementary school) in downtown Ignacio. All valley residents are invited to bring a dish to share and to see what the ELHI has to offer. The ELHI grand opening is this evening with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m., the potluck, a haunted house, and building tours. For potluck information call 884-4747.

TARA to host chili cookoff and potluck

TARA's fall chili cookoff and potluck will be Friday, Oct. 30, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Tiffany-Allison-Rosa-Arbloes Community Center, 333 Milton Lane in Arboles. Participants will sample the chili entries and vote for their favorite. The People's Choice winner will get a $25 Wal Mart gift card. There will be other awards in various chili categories.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for kids age 6-12, and free for under age 6. Please have chili, cornbread, or dessert to the community center by 5 p.m.

Glow sticks available in Bayfield

The Upper Pine River Fire Protection District has teamed up this year with the First National Bank of Durango at Bayfield to provide Halloween glow sticks for all elementary school kids in the community. Every year hundreds of kids nationwide are hit in the streets by drivers who simply did not see them. The glow sticks will be distributed Oct. 30 at local schools, and some will be available at the bank, as well.

Bayfield Harvest Festival is Oct. 31

Studio Sellke and other Aspen Plaza businesses will host a Harvest Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. The event includes vendor booths, live music by Mile Marker 4, costume contest, pumpkin carving contest, and more. Donations are being accepted for the Bayfield Food Bank. Sponsors are Mini Merc, Pine Cone Restaurant, Brenda's Old West Cafe, Bayfield Liquor, Dean Reeves CPA and Floral Expressions. For more information, call 884-0565.

SUCAP haunted house this weekend, next at ELHI

SUCAP Youth Services, in collaboration with Magic Brush, will host a haunted house in the new ELHI Community Building at 115 Ute St. in Ignacio. The event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 23, 24, 29 and 31 and from 7 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 30. Admission is $5 and will be collected at the door. Durango Lions hosting chili, craft fair

The Durango Lions Club will host its annual chili dinner from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. The craft fair will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Chili is $6 for adults, kids under three eat free.
