Health Fair seeks volunteers

9Health Fair needs volunteers for its 2017 Bayfield Fair which will be held on Saturday, May 6. Volunteers are needed for one to two hours per week and a few additional folks for the day of the fair. Grange hosting Bunco party, soup dinner

Mt. Allison Grange is hosting a Bunco party and soup feast and swap from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Mt. Allison Grange Hall. Bring some crackers or a pot of soup to share. For information, contact Yvonne at 799-3064. Further details can be found at facebook.com/mtallisongrange/

Demo of protection dogs is Feb. 24

Learn about Mondioring, training and exercises for protection dogs, from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at the Pine River Library. Diane Wray of Diane's Clever K9s will lead demonstrations with her dog Reegan, a Belgian Malinois. Mondioring is a protection dog sport that has a series of exercises to be executed by the dog-handler team in categories of obedience, agility, and protection. Information is at 884-2222, ext. 516.

Cabin Fever Reliever next Saturday

The Pine River Valley Historical Society is holding its annual Cabin Fever Reliever at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Bayfield Church of Christ on Bayfield Parkway. Free soup and chili will be served. Pie will be sold by the slice, followed by the famous pie and cake auction. Entertainment will be provided by Joel Racheff of the Bar D Wranglers.

Potter teaching vase class

Local potter Erin Weybright will teach a class on handbuilding pottery from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Pine River Library. Participants will handbuild and glaze a vase during the class, which will then be fired by Weybright.

Pre-registration is required and there is a $10 materials fee for the class, payable on registration. For information or to register contact the library at 884-2222 ext. 510.

Divorce Care classes available at church

First United Methodist Church in Durango will offer a 13-week Christ-based group about divorce from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Fridays, starting Feb. 24 through May 19.

Participants will find hope, support, and healing from the emotional stress and pain of divorce and separation. Cost for the adult program is $25 to register (scholarships are available). If needed, a companion program for Kids (DC4K) and/or childcare are also available for free. For more information and to register, call the church at 247-4213. Make blackout poetry at the Goat

Pine River Library will host a Blackout Poetry event at the Billy Goat Saloon at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. Participants will create their own poems by blacking out words in ordinary text. The library will provide the texts and Sharpie pens. For information call 884-2222, ext. 514.

Register by Feb. 28 for Winterguard

Registration is taking place for Winterguard camp with La Plata County Independent Youth Performing Arts. The camp teaches indoor colorguard skills and is for youth between four years and 22 years old. Registration is from Feb. 22 through Feb. 28.

Volunteer instructors and support staff are also welcome. Winterguard season runs from March 3 to April 14. To register, text or call 903-4294.

Library showing Arrival next Friday

As a part of their monthly "Fresh from the Theaters" program, Pine River Library will show the 2016 movie "Arrival" at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24.

The film is critically acclaimed, with eight Oscar nominations and a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film tells the story of linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams), who is tasked with decoding the language of mysterious alien visitors.

The program is free and there will be free popcorn and candy available for purchase.

Accounts established for electrician's family

Mike Cavanaugh, a longtime journeyman electrician and member of the construction community in Durango, died Jan. 7 after battling cancer.

Donation accounts have been established to help his wife, Margie, and son, Craig, with medical expenses and loss of income.
