Pine River Shares hosting turkey potluck

The fifth annual Pine River Shares Thanksgiving turkey dinner-potluck will be Friday, Nov. 17, at the old community gym on South Street in Bayfield. Serving will start around 5 p.m. All are welcome. Bayfield Chamber meeting at Living Well

Living Well and Raw Synergy in downtown Bayfield will host the November meeting for the Bayfield Area Chamber of Commerce. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 115 W. Mill St. Chamber volunteers also will host a ribbon cutting for the new business. Living Well and Raw Synergy provide bodywork, coaching, yoga and food for a healthy body, mind and spirit.

La Plata County Dems to show film

The Club - La Plata County Democrats on the Move will offer a showing of the film "The Case of the Stolen Election" from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 15 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

The film follows investigative journalist Greg Palast, who reveals Crosscheck, the system designed to purge 1.1 million U.S. citizens from the voter rolls.

The event is free and open to all.

Santé starts holiday canned-food drive

Downtown dispensary Santé Alternative Wellness started a canned-food drive Friday for Durango Food Bank, with a goal to collect 500 donations by Christmas.

All non-perishable canned-food items can be dropped off at the dispensary, 742½ Main Ave.

Tracy Robinette volunteered to pick up items from people who are unable to drop them off themselves.

Commissioner holding Bayfield office hours

La Plata County Commissioner Julie Westendorff will hold office hours for the general public to meet with her from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Nov. 16 at the Pine River Library Conference Room, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, in Bayfield.

Commissioner Westendorff appreciates the feedback she has received from people in the Bayfield area during her previous office hours, and is looking forward to meeting with Bayfield area residents again this month about their interests and concerns.

Volunteers sought for tree sale

San Juan Mountains Association is seeking volunteers to help during its fourth annual holiday tree sale, which will be held Nov. 24 through Dec. 21 in the railroad depot parking area, 209 W. College Drive. SJMA is holding the sale in partnership with Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and the city of Durango.

Applicants sought for AmeriCorps program

The Colorado AmeriCorps Community Opioid Response Program is accepting applications for 2017-18 service positions.

Accepted applicants will facilitate provider-education; offer education about safe storage and disposal of medications; provide youth-focused resources; and propagate opioid-related community campaigns and collaborations. Southwest Colorado positions are available in Durango, Telluride, Ouray, Montrose and Grand Junction.

The program is a statewide initiative that provides community support and strategies to reduce the impact of opioid abuse.

Genealogical Society to meet Saturday

Southwest Colorado Genealogical Society will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the Animas Museum, 3065 West Second Ave.

Charles M. Carrillo, an artist, author and archaeologist, will speak about Abiquiú, New Mexico. Carrillo is the recipient of the Hispanic Heritage Award from the Museum of International Folk Art, has won numerous awards, including a lifetime achievement award in 2006, during the annual Traditional Spanish Market in Santa Fe.

Historical society to tell veterans' story

La Plata County Historical Society will offer a presentation called "No Return from Over There" by Robert McDaniel at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Animas Museum, 3065 West Second Ave.

McDaniel will explore the lives of Jose Trujillo and Wiley Sheets, two soldiers from La Plata County who were killed during World War I. The Durango American Legion, chartered in 1919, is named after the veterans.

Horsemen to hold final 2017 meeting

Four Corners Back Country Horsemen will hold its last meeting of the year at 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Southern Ute Cultural Center, 77 County Road 517, in Ignacio.

The meeting will include a presentation about what was accomplished during 2017, a board of directors election, drawings to win prizes and a tour of the museum.

Snowdown beard event to begin Friday

The kickoff for the Snowdown beard-growing competition, a three month "beard race" from Nov. 10 to Feb. 1, will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave.

Contestants should arrive with facial hair freshly shaved to have their "before" head shot taken. A panel of judges will select a winner Feb. 1 during Snowdown festivities. Judges will also award prizes for best color, longest beard and best beer-absorption beard for men, and best leg hair for women.

The competition is free, and open to those 21 and older.
