Newspaper nooks available at Durango Public Library

Tablets preloaded with subscriptions from three papers
Durango Public Library Director Sandy Irwin holds a tablet displaying a daily newspaper in the periodicals area. An anonymous donor made it possible for the library to purchase two tablets that will carry newspaper subscriptions to The Durango Herald, The Denver Post and USA TODAY.

The Durango Public Library has made newspaper subscriptions available on digital tablets as part of a growing trend to be more sustainable and boost electronic resources.

The library has two 10-inch Samsung Galaxy tablets preloaded with subscriptions to The Durango Herald, The Denver Post and USA TODAY. The tablets and subscriptions were made available thanks to a donation, said Sandy Irwin, library director.

She declined to say who provided the money, other than to say the donors wanted to reduce paper use while encouraging people to read the news. It’s also an opportunity for patrons to try a tablet before buying one of their own, Irwin said.

The newspaper apps allow users to view newspapers as they would appear in print.

“One of the goals of the donation is to move people toward a more sustainable lifestyle, which includes shifting from print to electronic materials,” Irwin said in a news release.

“These new newspaper nooks help with that transformation, while providing greater access to the news locally, statewide and nationwide.”

The tablets are available for in-library use at the upstairs reference desk.
