Do we really need a “Next Step” project? The Herald article (Sept. 22) made it obvious Next Step should indeed be a nonstarter. Why mess with success? Durango isn’t exactly falling of the turista maps, so why the fuss about more sidewalks space and killing Main Avenue parking spots? My take: Our elected and appointed folk charged with “improving” need something to do. But Main Avenue?
Another college town I thoroughly enjoyed for many, many years was Boulder, but in 1977, the planners there mall-d Pearl Street and it changed the character of downtown forever. Even “Mork & Mindy” couldn’t bring it back.
Durango planners, appointees, elected folk, please redirect your energy (and my money) to cutting a deal with the railroad in order to put up a multistory car garage near the station.
Success awaits if you head in that direction.
