Next Step would ‘destroy the integrity’ of Durango’s Historic District

I am writing this on behalf of the Board of the La Plata County Historical Society. As an organization and as individuals, we are deeply invested in the preservation of the history of Durango.

Durango has one of the few Nationally Registered Main Street Historic Districts in Colorado. It is the intent of the Registry that the Historic District be preserved with the streetscape of the period of the 1880s and ’90s.

We believe the city has a responsibility to preserve that Historic District. In our position as a protector and preserver of history, we are strongly opposed to the Next Step plan proposed for historic downtown Durango.

To destroy the integrity of this special place would diminish its character and value as a source of pride for locals, as well as a draw for tourists.

History needs to be protected and honored.
