In February, 75 people with disabilities were among the 400 people treated to an unforgettable display of love at “A Night to Shine.”
Hundreds of volunteers who represented most of our local churches collaborated to stage this heart-warming event. Under the leadership of Joy Larson of First Baptist Church, volunteers transformed the fairgrounds building into a red carpet, prom-like setting, complete with a giant mirror ball, and lots of balloons and music.
A grant from the Tim Tebow organization, along with local donations, funded the project. A delicious dinner was provided for all who attended.
It is a pity that The Durango Herald chose not to cover this gala event. It was certainly something that our whole community could celebrate! However, there are lots of pictures available that capture the excitement and the fun that everyone experienced on “Treasure Ministry Facebook Page.”
I wanted to share my own experience from the event, as I hosted a man with disabilities named Richard. He is a man in a wheelchair without the use of his limbs, unable to speak with any clarity and totally dependent on others.
His mind is active, however, and I learned to understand some of what he tried to communicate, including that he was indeed having fun and enjoyed being out in the midst of the dancing, even in his wheelchair. When the dance was over and I was wheeling him out of the building, he communicated to some volunteers at the door that he loved them, and as I took him to his waiting van, he told me he would pray for me. It was a very humbling experience – and totally gratifying.
I would encourage others to honor and support this needy segment of our community and I would like to thank the churches of the area, Joy Larson and Treasure Ministry for taking the lead in serving these precious people.
