Nighthorse fiasco is part of a pattern

I’d like to thank The Durango Herald for the recent update on the status of Lake Nighthorse in “A failure to launch” (Herald, April 4). What an embarrassment this process has been. The inability of the decision-making groups to be able to compromise and come to an agreement that would allow the opening of the lake is a sad spectacle to observe.

The inept inaction of the decision-makers involved makes the United States Congress look good, and we are all aware of their single-digit approval ratings. One would think – and should reasonably expect – that local government would be less bureaucratic and more able to function efficiently than government at the massive federal level. Again, sadly, this is not so.

Add the Lake Nighthorse fiasco to our growing list of ineptitude that already includes: the Bridge to Nowhere and a brand-new rock-filled, unplayable field that sits idle for years awaiting a fix. The choice of our bridge across the Animas River at the entrance to our town from the west (160/550 intersection) impairs our view of our beautiful river as we cross it. We have succeeded in hindering our access to air, land and water.

Be careful, Durango. We may be earning and acquiring a reputation for incompetence that matches that of our natural beauty and active lifestyle. With our new “continuous-flow” intersection, we can’t even slow down enough to enjoy the sculpture.
