No. 1 IHS will play for another SJBL crown

Ignacio hangs its hat on defense to reach the district finals

Mancos didn’t score in double figures in any quarter against Ignacio High School on Friday in Cortez.

The Bobcats’ boys basketball team won the teams’ San Juan Basin League District Tournament opener 55-29 to advance to the tournament final.

“I still thought we gave them too many shots. They got a lot of offensive rebounds, which is uncharacteristic of us,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said. “I wasn’t really happy about it, but we defended well enough.”

Wyatt Hayes led the Bobcats with 14 points while Kelton Richmond joined him in double figures with 11.

IHS (20-0) scored 17 points in the first quarter and led 27-13 at halftime.

“We missed a high percentage. We were probably shooting in the 30s (percentage),” Valdez said.

The Class 2A No. 1-ranked Bobcats will play Telluride at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Montezuma-Cortez High School.

Telluride beat Ridgway in the other semifinal.

“We’re going to get a shootaround and try to get our rhythm back,” Valdez said. “Hopefully our defense stays like it was and keeps them around 10 or 12 points a quarter.”

Ignacio beat Telluride 66-45 last weekend at IHS.

The victory clinches the Bobcats’ spot in the Class 2A regional tournament.
