No. 16 Durango girls to host No. 48 Thompson Valley in CHSAA state tournament

After bye, DHS ready to end Thompson Valley’s Cinderella bid

The No. 16 Durango High School girls basketball team enjoyed a bye in the first round of the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A State Tournament earlier this week. Now, it’s showtime.

DHS (16-7) earned the final bye in the bracket and watched as No. 48 Thompson Valley upset No. 17 Montrose, 50-48, in the opening round of the tournament. Instead of facing the Southwestern League rival Indians for a third time this season after two previous wins, the Demons have an unfamiliar matchup coming against the Eagles (9-15) from the Loveland area.Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.

Aside from Montrose, the two only have one other common opponent this season. Both teams lost to Pueblo West, with the Eagles dropping a 61-44 game Jan. 21 and Durango falling to the same team 49-38 back on Dec. 8.
