No. 21 Chadron State turns tense into tease

GUNNISON – No. 21 Chadron State started slow but outscored Western State 21-7 after halftime to roll to a 35-13 victory Saturday.

The Eagles (3-1, 2-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) led just 14-6 at halftime and 14-13 early in the third quarter before scoring 21 unanswered points to turn a tense road contest into a comfortable win.

Glenn Clinton had two touchdown runs for Chadron State and ran for 114 yards, and Cody Roes and Danny O’Boyle caught touchdown passes from Jonn McLain, who threw for 242 yards.

Austin Ekeler lead the Mountaineers (0-4, 0-2 RMAC) with 154 yards rushing and a touchdown.

No. 5 CSU-Pueblo 48, Adams State 7

ALAMOSA – No. 5 CSU-Pueblo used a 24-point third quarter to roll to a road victory.

Cameron McDondle ran for 126 yards and a score as the ThunderWolves (4-0, 2-0 RMAC) accrued 501 yards of total offense and were 11-of-22 on third down.

Kieran Duncan also scored for the Thunderwolves on an 83-yard touchdown pass from Chris Bonner, who was just 13-of-32 passing but threw for 204 total yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Adams State (3-1, 1-1 RMAC) fumbled six times, losing four of them for turnovers.

Michael Carl’s 29-yard touchdown run was the only score of the night for the Grizzlies.

Adams State totaled just 274 yards of total offense and were penalized 11 times for 112 yards.

Colorado Mines 30, N.M. Highlands 10

GOLDEN – Penalties and three interceptions thrown by Emmanuel Lewis doomed New Mexico Highlands on the road against Colorado Mines.

Matt Brown threw for a pair of touchdowns, both to Diamond Gillis, and ran for another for the Orediggers (3-1, 2-0 RMAC), and Durango High School alumnus Avery Llewellyn hit field goals of 23, 34 and 35 yards.

Lewis threw for 246 yards, but his three interceptions and 15 penalties for 188 yards hurt the Cowboys (2-2, 1-1 RMAC).

Colorado Mesa 49, Black Hills State 11

GRAND JUNCTION – Colorado Mesa set a school record with seven interceptions in a rout of Black Hills State.

The Mavericks (2-2, 1-1 RMAC) picked off the Yellow Jackets’ Ward Anderson six times and Matt Rasmussen once, and offensive lineman Brett Boyer recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.

Colorado Mesa rushed for 205 yards and got touchdown runs from Jake Cimolino and Jerreon Dennis.

Black Hills State (0-4, 0-2 RMAC) got two field goals from Christian Parr and a safety.
