DENVER – A man initially thought to be impersonating the police was briefly detained Monday before authorities determined he was a volunteer for a police department in suburban Denver.
Colorado State Patrol received a report of road rage on U.S. Highway 36, where a witness said a car was speeding in and out of lanes. A trooper stopped the vehicle, which was fully outfitted with a laptop, lights and a push bumper.
The driver, who was wearing a dark blue dress uniform and had a lanyard with “Aurora Police Department” printed on it, provided his volunteer identification card and was disarmed and detained. Aurora police confirmed the 39-year-old man was a volunteer but not an officer.
Authorities warned the man and confiscated items marked “Aurora Police Department.” The Colorado State Patrol said in a news release late Monday there is not enough evidence to charge the man with impersonating a peace officer.
The man’s name has not been released, and an investigation is ongoing.
