With no motorcycle rally in Ignacio on Labor Day weekend, the Ignacio Chamber of Commerce and Farmers Fresh Market are hosting a green chile festival on Sept. 1 and 2.
The event will start at noon Friday, Sept. 1 with a corn hole tournament, beer garden, and music behind the grocery store.
Saturday has the same events, along with a green chile cook-off and salsa contest. Cooking starts that morning, with entries due by noon. Music and a beer garden start at noon, with kids' games at 1 p.m. Judging is at 2 p.m., followed by a block party from 6 to 10 p.m.
The store is selling and roasting local green chile this year grown near Ignacio.
The Ignacio bike rally has been a tradition since the mid-1990s, first as the Iron Horse Motorcycle Rally, then a private owner and the Ignacio Chamber of Commerce organized events for bikers. The most recent organizer, Johnny Valdez, ran the rally in 2015 and 2016. While the Four Corners Motorcycle Rally hasn't announced this year's event is canceled, no activities have been organized.
Other businesses and groups are expecting visitors and organizing events on their own for Labor Day weekend.
The Rusty Shovel Saloon in Vallecito is promoting Vallecito Bike Week, and Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio will have vendors, free entertainment, cash and merchandise giveaways on Saturday and Sunday. Entertainment features Tyller Gummersall on Saturday and Snake Oil with Stephen Pearcy of Ratt on Sunday.
Durango Harley-Davidson also has events and demo rides planned throughout the weekend.
Events in downtown Durango include the Kirk James Blues Band on Friday night and the Pete Guiliani Band on Saturday at Main Avenue and Tenth Street.
