Beautiful Forest Lakes – not! The largest subdivision in La Plata County has no enforceable codes in place to protect residents from building contractors who purchase land with no intention of building but using it as storage for waste.
Old appliances, broken down campers, rotting cuttings from trees, bumpers from cars and other castoff construction materials too hazardous for Bodo or the contractor too lazy to drive. He comes and goes, deposits trash and leaves. The neighbors are fed up and with no voice.
The Forest Lakes Metro District does not have a homeowners association so no one can do anything. Or can they? If a fire were to break out and his waste is the ignition, who is responsible? The FLMD for knowing and allowing this to happen? Or the county for the lack of codes to protect residents from contractors buying land and not using it for building, but to store garbage?
With more than 800 homes in our subdivision, a fire would be costly to La Plata County, the Pinon Hills Fire Department and to FLMD. In return would be no more income from residents from beautiful Forest Lakes. Instead, just scorched earth.
We should have enforceable codes on what can be deposited on land or a reasonable time frame in which to build.
