No excuses for unprofessional people, practices

I am appalled upon reading the forensic auditor’s statements regarding Visit Durango as presented by the city and the Herald in print on Nov. 24.

As an auditor with more than 25 years experience, I see this writing as an acceptance of the situation and the incompetence of the people involved. Every businessperson understands internal controls, and they all know they are required and that it is management’s responsibility to have controls in place – so employees can prove they were not irresponsible and criminal.

My take is that the managers and employees knew exactly what they were doing – abusing their jobs for the fun of it. It is unheard of to have an expensive meal without prior approval, after the fact review and substantial information on who was there and what was discussed.

We cannot make excuses for less than professional, ethical and competent people or practices. I would not suggest hiring any of the managers or offenders.
