No foul play suspected in La Plata County Fairgrounds fire

Bathroom, office and storage building burned Friday night

A fire Friday night in an unoccupied two-story building at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave., destroyed the second floor and left the structure unusable indefinitely, said Durango Fire Protection District Marshall Karola Hanks.

A building near the livestock pavilion toward the back of the fairgrounds ignited around 10:45 p.m. – the DFPD, which responded with three engines, three medic units, a battalion chief and EMS captain, had the fire contained “just a little after 11 (p.m.),” Hanks said in an interview Saturday morning.

No foul play is suspected and no injuries were reported, Hanks said. Fire crews remained on scene until after 1 a.m. Saturday.

Fire investigators as of Saturday morning had not estimated the damage to the building – which housed bathrooms on the first floor and offices and storage space on the second. Hanks said the fire likely started somewhere between the ceiling of the first story and the floor of the second.

“The lower portion is potentially salvageable, the upper area is going to require extensive demolition and rebuild,” Hanks said.

The building will be closed until further notice from La Plata County, Hanks said.
