No good reason to restrict e-bike use

My wife and I bought electric-assist mountain bikes last year. We have ridden them over 1,000 miles on trails and dirt roads. They allow us to get plenty of exercise and go farther than we normally would. They also allow people of different abilities to ride together without holding up a group.

Our Class 1 bikes only assist our pedaling effort and quit helping after 19 mph, so we are not speed demons. Our e-mountain bikes even cause less trail erosion due to our 3-inch-wide tires and low air pressure.

Our 60-plus-year-old bodies get to enjoy the beauty of being outside and participate in a great low-impact sport for several more years.

I recommend that Class 1 e-bikes be treated like any bicycle and we not restrict their use unnecessarily.
