Friday night’s overtime loss to Ridgway didn’t carry over to the Ignacio High School girls basketball team’s Saturday game in Nucla.
The Bobcats won 63-36 to set up a de facto San Juan League championship game next week.
“We came out really strong but got into a little bit of foul trouble early because we were just so over aggressive,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said. “Then we settled down and really found our groove.”
Hilda Garcia led the Bobcats with 25 points, and senior point guard Sky Cotton scored 20 and dished out seven assists.
“Those two girls had a big, big, big game for us,” Seibel said.
Alejandra Lujan grabbed 10 rebounds for IHS (13-4, 8-1 SJL), as well.
The Bobcats bounced back from their first league loss of the season by cruising in their final league road game.
“We played great team pressure defense and were able to take their momentum away,” Seibel said. “I was curious to see if the girls were going to have a letdown after a big loss at home. They didn’t have an answer for Sky or Hilda (on Friday).”
IHS will close out the regular season against Norwood at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the SunUte Community Center. The Mavericks are undefeated on the season and in SJL play as well as the defending Class 1A state champions.
A Bobcat win would give them a head-to-head tiebreaker in the league championship standings. Norwood takes it with a victory.
“Coming up next is the league championship game, basically,” Seibel said. “It will be a fantastic game.”
