No June gloom at the DAC: A month bursting with art, theater and creativity

Jason Lythgoe

If you’re looking for inspiration, entertainment or a splash of creative energy this month, the Durango Arts Center is the place to be. June is packed with events that showcase the vibrant artistic heartbeat of our community – and there’s truly something for everyone.

All month long, don’t miss the Tad Smith exhibit, “Voices Inside My Head: Echo,” an immersive experience that blends visual art, poetry and cutting-edge augmented reality. This is not your typical gallery show. Smith invites you to interact with the pieces in ways that blur the line between observer and participant. It’s a multisensory journey through imagination, memory and technology – a must-see for art lovers and anyone curious about how far creativity can go.

June also marks the kickoff of our Art and Theater Camps, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome the creative youths of Durango into the building. The DAC will be buzzing with energy as young artists and performers dive into their crafts, learning, growing and creating alongside professional teaching artists. The joy and enthusiasm they bring each day is contagious and reminds us all why we do what we do. Mark your calendars for June 20, 21 and 22, when the Durango Youth Theatre takes the stage. These performances are the culmination of hard work, rehearsal and a whole lot of heart. Come cheer on the next generation of performers as they bring their stories to life.

Father’s Day weekend is packed with unique events that offer something special for every Dad – or anyone looking for a good time. Start with laughs at Lower Left Improv, then stick around for our DAC Classic Movie Night, featuring the cult horror gem “Carnival of Souls” (1962). Cap off the weekend with Silent Sundays with Swanson, as world-renowned pianist Adam Swanson brings silent comedy shorts to life with live accompaniment. From Chaplin to Keaton to Laurel and Hardy, these timeless films paired with Swanson’s virtuosity create a magical moviegoing experience unlike any other.

And that’s not all – Durango PlayFest returns June 25 to 29, bringing top-tier playwrights, actors and directors to the Four Corners. PlayFest has become a must-see event, offering audiences a behind-the-scenes glimpse into new theatrical works. Past participants have included award-winning writers and recognizable names from film and television. Don’t miss this rare chance to see new plays before they hit the big stage.

At the DAC, we believe in celebrating creativity in all its forms, and June proves it. Whether you’re stepping into an augmented reality gallery, clapping for young performers or laughing at classic silent comedy, we’re proud to be your creative home in the Four Corners.
