I'm in full support of Leslie Orr's take on the eyesore property along State Highway 140 in Hesperus (Herald, Oct. 12).
I may be mistaken, but since Hesperus is unincorporated it comes under the rules and regulations of La Plata County, so that governmental body would be the one to mandate a cleanup.
Good luck with that. Because my own experience with trying to persuade the county to do something about the polluted trash dump that borders my property, I was told by a commissioner that there was no county junk code and that “property rights” held sway.
So apparently, you can do whatever you want with your land in the county including turning it into a vehicle graveyard where gas, oil and fluids leak into the watershed to float downstream and become somebody else's trouble.
Take a left off 160 and head up Wildcat Canyon a short distance to witness Exhibit A.
