No new leads in eastern La Plata County mailbox vandalisms

Damage appears to have halted, Sheriff’s Office says

The number of mailboxes reportedly damaged across eastern La Plata County appear to have stopped in the past couple of weeks. However, the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office says the vandal remains at large.

“We haven’t received any additional calls, and no arrests have been made,” said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chris Burke.

At least 41 mailboxes have been vandalized since Aug. 5, causing an estimated $800 to $1,000 in damage. Although that number has not increased in the past two weeks, Burke said that other than the possibility the vandal might have seen the Durango Herald’s reporting on the subject, the reason for the halt is unknown.

In two separate incidents within eight hours on Aug. 5 multiple mailboxes on County Road 311 near Ignacio were damaged, and multiple mailboxes were damaged on Cottonwood Lane, northwest of Durango-La Plata County Airport. Mailboxes on County Roads 307, 311, 510 and 513 also were targeted.

Burke said the Sheriff’s Office has increased its presence in areas that were hit by the vandalism, but no new developments have emerged. He also said there are no other areas that the Sheriff’s Office was monitoring for damaged mailboxes.

Burke said the Sheriff’s Office has not received security camera footage that might have shed light on the activity.

Anyone with new information is being asked to call the Sheriff’s Office’s central dispatch line at 385-2900.
