No obvious cause in local woman’s death

Officials fast-tracking toxicology tests

Durango police and the La Plata County coroner could not determine any specific cause Wednesday in the death of a Durango woman who was found last weekend in the Animas River.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday morning in Durango on Karen Michelle Reyes.

“There was no obvious cause of death,” Coroner Jann Smith said. “At this point, we’re going to have to wait for the toxicology report.”

The autopsy was performed by Dr. Robert A. Kurtzman, a forensic pathologist from Grand Junction.

“Bob said he’s going to try to get the report quickly,” Smith said, estimating results might be available in a week to 10 days.

Reyes went missing Friday night and was found Saturday in the Animas River behind Durango High School.

Lt. Darrell Robertson with the Durango Police Department said no further information about the case would be released until investigators receive the results of a toxicology report.

Police have called the case “suspicious,” but they have provided no details about the possible cause of death. They say the Animas River Trail is safe to use.

Reyes, 42, left her house Friday evening to walk her two dogs. She was found Saturday just under the surface of the water in an eddy on the east side of the river about a quarter-mile south of the foot bridge behind the La Plata County Fairgrounds.

She was reported missing by her boyfriend Saturday morning.
