No ‘roundabouts on main highway’

Well, I’m sure like many, I too have an opinion of the new Grandview Interchange and am not totally impressed with the tightness of the layout.

First of all, roundabouts may be somewhat appropriate in town or in residential areas, but have no business being on a major highway interchange.

Have been through it numerous times already and traffic, however, seems to move along. A few drivers were hesitant, of course, for their first experience in navigating it.

When coming out of Durango and exiting off U.S. Highway 160 east to the interchange (to Wilson Gulch/Maverik/Farmington) the first bridge abutment has a nasty dipping transition. I can’t figure why it wasn’t corrected with the others with the same issue.

After doubling back across to U.S. Highwy 550 south to the roundabout, it was congested with what seemed a tight right turn, then I entered directly into the roundabout to head up the hill.

It doesn’t seem the trucking industry was given much consideration. A main road and with numerous oversize loads (width and length) continually passing through this spot, it is sure going to make things very difficult for them.

I do like the continuous movement with no traffic lights.

Overall, a nice improvement. The contractor also did a nice job, but probably – like many – disagree with the roundabouts on a main highway.

Now, for the next project from Elmore’s Corner to Bayfield, hang on!
