Noah Loutherback hits walk-off homer for Bayfield

Wolverines earn a home win

With the pitching dialed in and the defense getting more comfortable, the Bayfield High School baseball team welcomed the Piedra Vista junior varsity team to town Saturday.

Noah Loutherback hit a walk off, three-run home run for Bayfield that put the 10-run rule in effect, as the Wolverines won 13-1.

Bayfield (7-3) put four runs up in the first inning and five in the third inning. A four-run sixth inning was good enough for the win.

Loutherback went 2-for-4 including his home run. The senior first baseman drove in five runs and scored twice.

“We played pretty well,” said Bayfield head coach Jonathon Qualls. “Piedra Vista will put the ball in play for the most part. They made our defense work a little.”

Piedra Vista is a Class 5A school out of Farmington. It’s varsity program is a perennial state championship contender.

BHS senior Brody McGhehey was on the mound and went six innings. He allowed only two hits and struck out nine batters. At the plate, McGhehey went 1-for-4 with a run.

“Brody threw a really good game; I couldn’t ask for more from him,” Qualls said. “Our pitching has been strong all year long. Overall, we made some defensive plays.”

Taed Heydinger went deep as well for the Wolverines, going 2-for-4 with the home run, three runs and two RBIs in the contest. Zane Phelps went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Kelton McCoy went 2-for-4 with two runs.

Up next for Bayfield is Montezuma-Cortez at 3 p.m. Monday at Montezuma-Cortez High School.
