I want to thank Judith Reynolds, the able cartoonist and staff writer for the Herald, for her wonderful presentation at the Summer Program at Center for Southwest Studies in the afternoon of June 23 on Gustaf Nordenskiöld, the Swedish scientist who put Mesa Verde on the world map of archaeology in the 1890s.
His often tumultuous relationship with Durango authorities, the friendship and help of the Mancos ranching family the Wetherills, who rediscovered Mesa Verde while hunting lost cows, and arrest and jailing under trumped-up trespass charges were beautifully illustrated and passionately presented.
