Katelynn Sheppard, 13, competes Saturday in the Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Competition at the Escalante Middle School gym. The competition hosted by Durango Elks Lodge No. 507 is for boys and girls ages 8 to 13. After the 14 competitors shoot two rounds of 10 and 15 shots, six winners will advance to the next round in Montrose, then to state in Salida, regionals in Colorado Springs and then Chicago for the national finals in April. Anthony Flint of Durango competing in the 12-and 13-year-old boys division placed second in 2016 after making 23-for-25 free-throws in the Elks National Hoop Shoot Final.
