The month of November at Fort Lewis College has a bountiful harvest of cultural opportunities for you to enjoy.
“Everyday Heroes” is the theme for the concerts to be put on by the Southwest Civic Winds on Saturday and Sunday. They’ll be joined by the Trumpet Geezers for two concerts celebrating Veterans Day with vibrant and soul-stirring music. SWCW will be at Piedra Vista high school in Farmington on Saturday and at the River Church on Sunday in Durango. Visit www.southwestcivicwinds.org for information.
The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College has two productions taking place in the Mainstage Theatre. Robert Dubak plays a multitude of charters, bringing two unique one-man shows “The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron?” on Tuesday and the “The Book of Moron” on Wednesday. Dubac’s shows, filled with an array of truisms about the sexes, have been called sensitive, tasteless and wickedly funny. The off-Broadway hits attempt to answer age-old questions: What do women want? Who am I? What do I believe? and What’s the point? Both shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Theatre building, not the Concert Hall.
Also on Wednesday is the Art Galleries’ Fall Student Invitational. The exhibit will open with a reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and will run through Dec. 15. The Art Gallery will be closed over the Thanksgiving Recess, Nov. 20-24. Gallery Hours are 10-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 247-7167 or visit http://bit.ly/2m6YoJh. “Dance to my Soft Song” – the Jazz Ensemble and the Pan-American Ensemble will join forces at 7 p.m. Nov. 28 in the Concert Hall to get your toes tapping with the rhythmic, sultry sounds each group brings. Although the dance floor will not be open, you may find yourself dancing in your seat to their enticing sounds.
The Artists in Residence bring pianist Mark Valenti to Roshong recital hall on Nov. 29 and 30. Valenti has played no fewer than 17 solo recitals this year. He’s a hardworking, passionate performer and teacher. From www.markvalenti.com: “Mark Valenti has performed recitals live on WFMT classical radio. He has also done extensive work in the Jazz field including performances with Gregory Hines, Frank Foster and Al Grey and has appeared on television with Joe Sudler’s Swing Machine and singer/actor Christopher Durham.” Join us in Roshong at 12:20 p.m. Nov. 29 to watch him work with piano students at a free master class. The next evening, you’ll not want to miss his performance at 7 p.m. (Nov. 30). Admission (cash or check at the door) is $15 for adults and $5 for students.
Wrapping up the week on Dec. 1 is the music department’s annual Holiday Concert. We’ll have a grand mix of holiday music to start off the month in style with band, choirs and string ensemble performances. You’ll be tapping your toes and singing along with your favorites, and hear some new things, too. There will be an appearance by Santa with opportunities for pictures. Bring the family for a festive evening! Tickets can be purchased online or at the door and are $5 for adults and $1 for students.
