Holiday Closures

Durango Public Library will be closed Nov. 10-11 for Veterans Day; close at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 22 and be closed Nov. 23-24.

Ongoing Programs

Tuesdays, 2 p.m.: Baby story time. A lap-sit story time for infants-18 months. Interactive fun with music, stories, finger-plays, counting rhymes and playtime. Babies should bring their parents or caregivers to join in the fun.

Thursdays, 10:30 a.m.: Toddler story time. Stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities perfect for children ages 2-3. Story time lasts approximately 30 minutes with a fun craft after.

Fridays, 10:30 a.m.: Preschool story time. Stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities perfect for children ages 3-5. Story time lasts approximately 30 minutes with a fun craft after.

Nov. 1, noon-1:30 p.m.: Coffee with the Superintendent. Coffee with Durango School District 9-R Schools Superintendent Dan Snowberger will take place in the second-floor meeting room. Free coffee and light snacks provided by the Common Grounds Coffee Cart will be served.

Highlight: The Library Park is finally almost done. We’ll be celebrating the grand opening from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 11. Join us for all-ages crafts, activities and games, plus free treats and hot drinks.

Nov. 7, 6 p.m.: South From Corregidor: A WWII Escape Story. Tim Deal, retired U.S. Coast Guard commander, will present the thrilling story of how Lt. Commander John H. Morrill and 17 members of his crew from the USS Quail (AM-15) escaped from Manila Bay, Philippines, on the evening of May 6, 1942, just hours after Gen. Wainwright surrendered all U.S. and Filipino forces to the Japanese.

Nov. 8, 2 p.m.: BookMarks Book Club. Discussion of Women in the Castle.

Nov. 8, 6 p.m.: Pre-Ski Season Yoga. Learn simple yoga poses and mindfulness techniques to improve your success on the slopes this winter. $7 per class at the door.

Nov. 9, 5:30 p.m.: Community Art Show Artist Reception. Enjoy refreshments and the local art in our first Fall Community Art show.

Nov. 11, 1 p.m.: Library Park Grand Opening Party. Tour the new park. S’mores around the fire pit, pictures with Smokey Bear, hot chocolate and coffee bar with delicious toppings, cupcake decorating, American Legion color guard and door prizes. Plus crafts, games and activities for all ages.

Nov. 13, 7 p.m.: Classic Movie Monday: “Murder on the Orient Express” (1974).

Nov. 15, 6 p.m.: Microsoft Excel Basics. In this class, you will learn the basics of Excel (inserting text, basic functions, AutoSum, AutoFill and more) by creating a simple budget spreadsheet and making Excel do all the math for you. Call the library at 884-2222, ext. 510, to register.

Nov. 16, 1 p.m.: Thursday Crafternoons. It’s a crafting potluck. Bring an activity and supplies to share and join in communal crafting.

Nov. 16, 6:30 p.m.: Avalanche Awareness Basics. Join us for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center’s “Know Before You Go” basic avalanche awareness program. In this 90 minute presentation, you’ll learn about the power of avalanches, understand when and why they happen and learn how you can have fun in the mountains and avoid avalanches.

Nov. 17, 1 pm.: Homeschool Lego Time. Join homeschoolers who want to create, meet new friends and have lots of fun together. All ages are welcome, just bring your stash of Legos or Duplos, your cool ideas and your parent.

Nov. 30, 6 p.m.: Ornament Making: Come make tin ornaments out of old cans for your own tree or as gifts. Free, no registration necessary.

Dec. 2, 9 a.m.: Friends of the Library Winter Book and Bake Sale. The Friends of the Pine River Library District has picked through stacks of books to sell their best picks. There will also be a silent auction for art that has been donated. Plus, there will be a food drive for Pine River Shares. Bring a nonperishable food item and you’ll get a free baked good from the bake sale.

Tuesdays, 4 p.m.: Inklings Book Club. Join Inklings for snacks and a wonderful reading adventure every Tuesday from 4-5 p.m. for any third- through fifth-graders.

Wednesdays, 10 a.m.: Tasty Stories. Join in the fun with stories, songs, puppets and more that encourage development of early literacy skills in young children.

Wednesdays, 2 p.m.: Teen Café. Teen Café is open to teens in grade six-12. It is a place to play games, do homework, make crafts, relax with friends and have fun.

Wednesdays, 3 pm.: ICL MakerSpace. The ICL MakerSpace is open with a unique skill session happening. Play with legos, learn about robotics and discover other unique skills.

Ongoing Events (Adult)

Tuesdays, 10 a.m.: Oil Pastels for Beginners. Come explore an effortless way to create artwork with oil pastels. You can layer, blend, stipple, scratch or draw with the sticks of color to create interesting realistic or abstract images. Painting with oil pastels is an affordable way to work with oil paint. We will experiment by applying the color on different surfaces such as paper, board and canvas. The class will be facilitated by Linda Frazee. Materials fee to be announced. Class limited to 14 adults.

Tuesdays, 1 p.m.: ICL Knitters. ICL Knitters meet to work on knitting projects, socialize and share ideas. Everyone is welcome to drop-in.

Fridays, 10 a.m.: Open Art Studio. The Open Studio is a time for artists to gather to work on their own projects while getting to socialize with other like-minded people. Participation is not dependent on having taken classes at the library. All artists are welcome. Pat Knight will be on hand most days to offer assistance as needed.

Nov. 2, 5 p.m.: Tatting. Join like-minded people learning the age-old art of tatting. Randy Houtz returns to ICL to help us continue to learn and create. Join us for some fun and conversation as we work to improve our tatting skills. Open to everyone and all skill levels.

Nov. 2, 6 p.m.: Poetry Reading by Esther Belin. ICL is hosting an evening with Esther Belin. Belin is a local poet and multimedia artist; she will read from her long-awaited second poetry collection Of Cartography.

Nov. 5, 2 p.m.: Writers Workshop. The ICL Writers’ Workshop meets on the first and third Sundays at ICL. Local authors meet to share, review and critique each other’s work. Spring and summer issues of the Cedar Moon Journal are available for a suggested $5 donation.

Nov. 6, 4 p.m.: Anime Club. Join us for an anime showing and a cultural activity. Because of the content of the shows, all participants must be in middle school or older.

Nov. 6, 5:30 p.m.: The Basics of Computers. Learn the basics of using a computer and practice using a mouse. No computer experience required.

Nov. 7, 5:30 p.m.: Navajo Code Talkers: Bob McPherson. Author and historian Bob McPherson will join us to speak about Navajo code talkers during World War II. McPherson’s book, Under The Eagle: Samuel Holiday, Navajo Code Talker, includes the unique story of Navajo twins and their experiences as secret code talkers.

Nov. 9, 5:30 p.m.: Night Sky Party. Join local night sky expert Anil Chopra as we view the late fall night sky. Saturn and its famous rings will feature predominately on this night. Bring the whole family and we will supply the hot cocoa. Telescopes will be available but feel free to bring your own binoculars.

Nov. 12, 2 p.m.: Book Discussion “Pushing the Limits of Tradition.” Pushing the Limits book discussion group is back. We’ll be discussing the book Station Eleven by Hillary Mantel. As before, we’ll watch a short video and discuss science in everyday life. Books are available at the library service desk. Join us for a fun and stimulating look at tradition in a whole new light.

Nov. 13, 12 p.m.: Mystery Book Club. ICL’s Mystery Book Club will be reading What the Dead Leave Behind by Rosemary Simpson. Simpson’s debut, first in a planned series, features complex characters, a vivid look at old New York in the late 1800s, and a mystery with a twist, says Kirkus Reviews. Join us for lunch provided by the library and good conversation about all things mystery.

Nov. 20, 5:30 p.m.: The Basics of Photoshop. Photoshop is a powerful, all-purpose photo editing and art creation tool. In this class, we’ll learn about lighting and color corrections, cropping and scaling photos, fixing blemishes and doctoring photos, and layer manipulation. Then take your new skills into our new MediaLab and create something amazing.

Nov. 24, 1 p.m.: Gingerbread Houses. Stop by the library any time between 1 and 4 p.m. to make gingerbread houses out of graham crackers, icing and candy. This program is for all ages. Your finished product can be entered in the Gingerbread Contest at the “Taste of Christmas” celebration on Dec. 1 at the ELHI Community Center.

Nov. 27, 5:30 p.m.: Clean Up and Speed Up Your Computer. Learn how to remove programs, manage the space on your computer, speed up your browsing and more.

Nov. 30, 6 p.m.: The Physical and Spiritual Journey of a Southern Ute Elder written by Judith A. Stone recounts the life of Russell Box Sr. ICL will host the presentation based on his memoir and he will talk about the spiritual influence of his paintings. Russell Box Sr. is a talented storyteller and artist.
