NRA provides insurance, funds to club

After having read the preceding letters and editorial about the Durango Gun Club and the NRA (Herald, March 9), I have to say maybe you folks should attend a club meeting before you accuse it of trying to involve the NRA for political purposes.

Also, it’s NRA/ILA that is the political part. The branch that the gun club wants us to belong to is responsible for promotion of safety and knowledge of proper firearm handling. It also helps with funding improvements to ranges to improve usability and safety and provides members with insurance against injury incurred at competitive events – something my regular insurance expressly will not cover. As far as the Humane Society not donating to the animal shelter, you better check your facts: It’s one of their main supporters. The Humane Society donates regularly to shelters to improve conditions, and last I checked, it is an enormous political entity.
