Severe allergic reaction of several students at Animas High School to nuts – fresh or in food products – has brought a request from the administration that no nuts be brought to campus.
“We have several students who are severely allergic to various types of nuts,” said Libby Cowles, assistant head of school. “We have decided to strongly encourage students, staff and volunteers to help make Animas High School a nut-free campus.”
Some students can become very ill from just the fumes, Cowles said.
“Even if it were a single student who was allergic, we make the same request,” Cowles said. “We want everyone to feel safe and comfortable.”
Peanut allergies are the most common, Cowles said.
The request is just that: a request, Cowles said. It is not a requirement, she said.
Animas High School has about 350 people on campus, including 314 students.
