Why has it become so popular, and why do so many more bestselling authors consider it the be-all and end-all of modern writing? If more and more authors are using Immersive POV, are there any drawbacks to consider?

Oct. 10, 6-8 p.m.: DPL Lit Fest Author Event: Katie Arnold in conversation with local author Heather Hansman. Katie Arnold is a longtime journalist and bestselling author of “Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World: Zen and the Art of Running Free” (2024), a finalist for the 2024 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards, which tells the story of a traumatic wilderness accident and her path to healing. Her critically acclaimed memoir, “Running Home,” was published in 2019. An elite ultra runner and longtime student of Zen, she teaches writing workshops and Flow Camp retreats exploring the link between movement, nature and creativity.

Oct. 11, 2- 4 p.m.: DPL Lit Fest Workshop: How to Write a Children’s Story. Local author and life coach Brooke Heller will guide you through the first steps toward writing your children’s story. You will walk away from the workshop with a rough draft of your story, and the motivation to continue working on it, including next steps toward illustration and publishing. Oct. 15, 6-7:30 p.m.: DPL Lit Fest Workshop: Poet Laureate Word Honey. An evening of writing and reading poetry at the library with Esther Belin and Zoe Golden.
Oct. 16, 6-8 p.m.: DPL Lit Fest Author Keynote Event: Peter Heller. Evening will start at 6 p.m. with an author meet and greet with drinks and hors d'oeuvres, followed by an author talk and book signing. A Zoom link will be available for those unable to attend in person.
Oct. 17, 6-8 p.m.: DPL Lit Fest Workshop: How to Write a Great First Page: With Candace Nadon, associate English professor, Fort Lewis College. In this workshop, we’ll discuss the factors necessary to make a great first page of a novel, no matter the genre, and examine those factors in action in some stellar first pages. We’ll also write and workshop our own first pages, so come with your novel ideas. Session is designed not only to help you begin the kind of novel readers can’t put down, but inspire you to submit to the Durango Public Library’s November First Page Contest. Space is limited, preregistration required.
Oct. 18, 1-2 p.m.: Folk Jam. An informal “jam session” of traditional and contemporary folk music. Bring your voice and/or an instrument (if you play one). Share the songs you know and learn new ones. Everyone is welcome even if you just want to listen, but be ready to have a good time. Led by local educator and folk musician Dennis Lum.
Oct. 18, 1-3 p.m.: Silent Book Club. An hour of dedicated reading. Socialize after, or not. How it works: Bring a book or grab something new off the shelf and read alongside other readers. There are no assigned readings. All book genres and formats are welcome.
Oct. 20, 4:30-5:30 p.m.: Climate Café. A space to share thoughts and feelings about the climate crisis in community. Meetings are an opportunity to build an ecosystem of community, to cultivate resilience and to continue to meet the unknown future from a place of connection. Oct. 21, 11 a.m.-noon.: Kindergarten Readiness Play & Learn Workshop – A Way With Words: Early Language, Talking and Singing. Parents, caregivers and their preschoolers invited to a free six-part workshop series focused on preparing young children for kindergarten. Each session will explore important areas of school readiness, with hands-on activities that build early literacy, math, motor and social-emotional skills.
Oct. 21, 6-7:30 p.m.: Non-Traditional Book Club: Spooky Stories. Join us at Bread downtown for a “nontraditional” book club, where the discussion is based on a genre/topic rather than a specific book. No required reading, just a topic/genre to discuss and plenty of delicious snacks to enjoy. This month, we’ll be chatting about scary, frightful and creepy books in celebration of spooky season. Oct. 27, 4-5:30 p.m.: Death Café. A group-directed discussion of death; it is not a grief support group. Objective is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives. Facilitated by Lola Montano, local hospice nurse and trained death doula.
Oct. 27, 6-7:30 p.m.: Living with Mountain Lions. Learn how to reduce human-wildlife conflicts in Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s “Living With Wildlife” lecture series. In this lecture, we will talk about the biggest cats in North America, the mountain lion.

Paddle Tribal Waters: First Descent of the Klamath: Monday, Oct. 20, 6 .pm. Meet new Fort Lewis College student Ruby Williams, a Quartz Valley tribal member and Karuk person raised along the banks of the Klamath River. She will talk about her experience kayaking the first full descent of the Klamath River in over 100 years. She will be joined by local kayaker Finlay Marshall, who participated in part of this historic journey.
Playful Pals: Connect, Play, Explore: Mondays, 2 p.m. (new time). Connect with other families/caregivers and foster a playful environment for preschool-aged kids. Coffee, tea, healthy snacks and play space provided.

Kids’ Gamer Club (Grades 3-5): Tuesdays, 4-5 p.m. Board games, console video games, Roblox, Minecraft and more. Some computers provided, but gamers can bring their own laptop or gaming devices if they prefer. This program is geared for grades 3+ but younger children are welcome to attend with a caregiver.
Teen Time: Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 4-5:30 p.m. Hang out in the teen area for cards, tabletop games and more. Ease into the after-school time at the library with space to play, read, work on homework and chill.
Teen TGIT: Thursdays, 4-5:30 p.m. Join us in the community room for games (Xbox, Oculus, Roblox, etc.), activities, music and snacks. On the third Thursday of each month, watch for something special: possibly cooking, maybe international snacks – who knows? Seecalendar for more details.

Friday Fun Day: Fridays, 1-2 p.m. First Fridays: Lego Club; second Fridays: Crafternoon; third Fridays: Pokemon; fourth Fridays: Crafternoon; fifth Friday (Halloween): Crafternoon. Drop in activity time is open to all ages. People are free to come and go as they please, and we encourage caregivers to participate alongside their little ones, as these activities are not monitored in the way that our registration required programs are.
Mountaintop Movement Fitness Classes: These classes are hosted by local fitness instructors Brian and Tammy Williams. Follow them on the Mountaintop Movement Facebook page for more information.
Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-9 a.m. Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights. The free classes are always similar in style but use different moves to keep it fun and fresh. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels are welcome. These classes are free, but donations are always welcome. Weather permitting, classes may be held outside.
Yoga for All: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:15-10:15 a.m.: In this informal, free meetup, we create awareness and harmony between the mind and body that allows us to remove stress and anxiety. All you need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged.

Repair Café: Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. A neighborhood initiative that promotes repair as an alternative to tossing things out. Bring your broken items to fix them on the spot with the help of volunteer repairers.
Observe the Moon Night: Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. We’ll have telescopes for stargazing, engaging displays, fun activities, thrilling rocket launches, and food and beverages to enjoy. At Shoshone Park.
Virtual Reality Beat Saber: Friday, Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. Play Beat Saber with Liz. Up to four players can play this fun VR game with music and light sabers. Program is designed for adults. Teens 13 and older may play with adult permission and a signed waiver.
DIY Magical Fairy Lights with Wine Bottles Class: Friday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. A fun holiday project! We’ll fill wine bottles with fairy lights and provide different painting and decorating ideas for the outside. All supplies will be provided.
Make Your Own Candy Apples: Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 4:30 p.m. Learn how to make your own candy apples. Everyone will be able to make a candy apple with a caramel dip and tons of different toppings.
